I Need Help Paying My Private Student Loans
Funding a college education can be a significant financial burden, but student loans can ease that burden. Student loans can make it easier to finance college, but you can only use them for certain expenses.

You cannot use your student loan for expenses like a personal loan. Student loans are used to cover certain costs of attending college. Several types of expenses can be paid for with student loans, but some expenses cannot be paid for with student loans:
If you are unsure whether a fee will be approved, you can contact your loan servicer or lender.
In addition to the limits on expenses covered by student loans, there are also limits on certain approved categories of expenses.
Let’s take transportation as an example. If you already own a car while you’re in college, you can use your student loans for vehicle maintenance and gas. However, you can’t use student loans to buy a car. Likewise, food you buy at the grocery store may be a qualified room and board expense (e.g., lodging), but eating at a restaurant is not.

The following personal expenses are ineligible for federal student loans and may not be eligible with many private lenders:
Use the student loan calculator below to find out how much you will owe over the life of a federal or private student loan.
With a USD loan, you pay USD each month and pay a total of USD in interest over the life of the loan. Assuming you repay the loan in full while in college, you will pay a total of $ over the life of the loan.
Many college students tend to be on a tight budget, and it can be tempting to use student loans to finance other expenses not directly related to attending college. Be careful here, though: using student loan funds for unauthorized expenses could be a violation of your student loan agreement.
Should I Cosign My Child’s Private Student Loan?
When you sign a student loan agreement, you agree to only use the loan funds granted to you to finance your higher education. If you misuse these loan funds, the Department of Education or your private lender may terminate the loan agreement and demand immediate repayment of the loan.
Federal Pell Grants are not loans and therefore do not require repayment (except in certain circumstances). This means you can keep any unused Pell Grant funds. In 2022-23, the maximum federal Pell Grant amount is $6,895. Completing the FAFSA can help you qualify for grants and scholarships.
When you apply for a student loan, the lender (whether it is a federal lender or a private lender) first makes the payment directly to the school. The school then uses the loan or grant to cover tuition, room, and board (for students living on campus).
Your school will pay the remaining amount directly to you so that you can finance your education.

Note: If you receive a student loan refund and do not use the entire remaining amount for educational expenses, you can use it to pay off your student loan.
No, you cannot pay your car loan with student loan funds. Transportation to and from school is an approved expense, but you cannot use the loan to purchase a car. However, you can use student loans to pay for gas and vehicle maintenance.
Yes, when you apply for a student loan, you sign a loan agreement stating that you will use the funds for college expenses. If you misuse your federal student loans, you risk having the Department of Education void your loan agreement and demand immediate repayment of the loan. Private lenders can handle this situation differently.
Yes, you can use a student loan to cover some of your living expenses. Approved living expenses include, for example, room and board. This category may include food purchased at a grocery store.

In some cases, you can use your student loans to finance health insurance. Many schools require their students to have health insurance to enroll. Often colleges and universities offer on-campus health insurance plans that you can enroll in if you don’t have outside health insurance. If you enroll in on-campus medical care, the cost of that care will be added to your cost of attendance, which you can pay with your student loans.

Jacqueline DeMarco has been a personal finance writer for over seven years. She has contributed content to more than a dozen financial brands, including LendingTree, Credit Karma, Fundera, Chime, MagnifyMoney, Student Loan Hero, ValuePenguin, SoFi, and Northwestern Mutual. How do people get out of student loan debt and when is loan forgiveness an option? Statistics show how much student loan debt American college graduates carry, and the amount can be shocking for individual borrowers. Fortunately, students may be able to reduce their debt burden by taking advantage of income-driven repayment plans and public employee relief.
Only Direct Loans and Stafford Loans (replaced by Direct Loans in 2010) provided by the federal government are eligible for the forgiveness program.
If you have other types of federal loans, you may be able to consolidate them into a direct consolidation loan, which may give you access to other income-driven repayment plan options. Non-federal loans from private lenders and lending companies are not eligible for forgiveness.
Federal student loan borrowers who attended for-profit colleges and sought loan forgiveness because the schools defrauded them or violated certain laws suffered a setback in 2020 when then-President Donald Trump vetoed a bipartisan resolution. New rules are being rolled back, and it will also be much more difficult to get loan forgiveness. The new, stricter rules come into force on July 1, 2020.

In August 2022, the Biden administration and the U.S. Department of Education approved $32 billion in student loan debt relief for more than 1.6 million borrowers; applications will open in October. However, in November 2022, a federal court issued an order blocking the student loan forgiveness program. On June 30, 2023, the Supreme Court ruled that the Biden administration does not have the authority to forgive up to $20,000 in federal student debt per borrower.
For federal student loans, the standard repayment period is 10 years. If the 10-year repayment term puts monthly payments out of reach for you, you can enroll in an income-driven repayment (IDR) plan.
Income-driven plans have a payment term of 20 or 25 years. After this period, the remaining balance of the loan will be forgiven, assuming you have made all required payments. In the past, payments were based on your household income and household size and were often capped at 10%, 15% or 20% of your discretionary income, depending on the plan.
Here are the four IDR plans offered by the U.S. Department of Education, along with the repayment terms and monthly payments for each plan:
What Is A Private Student Loan?
For low-income earners with significant student loan debt, an IDR plan may be a good option. Eligibility varies by program, and certain types of federal loans are not eligible for repayment in all but one program. In addition, you must re-certify your income and household size every year, even if these have not changed over time.
To apply for an IDR, you must submit an income-driven repayment plan application, which can be completed online or via a paper form that must be requested from your loan servicer. You can choose a specific IDR plan by name or ask your loan servicer to put you on an income-based plan that you qualify for and that has the lowest monthly payments.
If any of the loans you want to include in the IDR program have different loan servicers, you must submit a separate application to each loan servicer.
To determine your eligibility for a specific plan and calculate your monthly payment, you must provide the following
