The last-minute appeal, which attracted worldwide attention, gave Nagantran a reprieve and he contracted COVID-19 in November last year, further delaying the process.

Singapore’s Court of Appeal heard his case on March 1 and reserved judgment until an unspecified date.

Ravi spoke to Al Jazeera about why he takes on such difficult cases. The interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Al Jazeera: You are one of the few lawyers involved in defending people on death row. Why do you get such cases?

M Ravi: My initial focus was mainly commercial and corporate affairs, intellectual property, technology and that sort of thing.

In 2003, when the Malaysian boy Vines Mouarti was facing the death penalty [for smuggling 27 grams of heroin into the country], I mounted a last-minute constitutional challenge at the request of the former opposition leader in Singapore, Mr Jayartnam. He is almost like the Nelson Mandela of Singapore.

The day before the execution, I asked the then chief judge if we could reopen the case. He said it was up to him and there wasn’t much I could do.

Then I asked [that] if I could show that he was innocent, would Mourt still be hanged? He said yes. It was a terrible statement. I saw how they treated the poor and oppressed. This led me to fight against the death penalty in Singapore.

Al Jazeera: The Law Society of Singapore suspended you from practicing law on psychiatric grounds due to your diagnosis of bipolar disorder. What happened?

M Ravi: When I was getting ready to refer to Nagaentran, my doctor suddenly told me that I am not well. And that’s right, the legal community said I had to stop because the doctor found I was unwell.

I’m still at work, making a bundle of papers. If not, Nagaentran will be in trouble.

Psychiatrists who have spoken to me from all over the world and other people I have spoken to have told me that I do not need treatment and that I just need to rest.

Of course I’m disappointed. My doctor initially told me that I can still contest Nagantran’s case and my MC [Medical Note] will end on 13th January. Then he continued until March 13. And the court won’t wait, with the Attorney General arguing that Nagaentran’s case should continue and be expedited.

Al Jazeera: What other challenges do you face in these difficult cases against the Singaporean state?

The authorities are extremely disappointed because I messed up their execution schedule. The Court of Appeal recognized that this is the first miscarriage of justice in Singapore.

In this case, the Court of Appeal said we made a mistake. The question I asked the attorney general is, “If I hadn’t come to this case as a lawyer, would I have gone?”I criticized the entire administration of the death penalty.

Then there is the media. They keep saying I’m crazy. There is psychological harassment related to my psychiatric condition.

M Ravi: It will be. Just look at the case of Yong Wooi Kong. He was only 19 when he was caught [trafficking heroin in Singapore in 2007].

So there is a precursor that tells us that things can change. While Singapore is committed to abolishing the death penalty, most countries in the Southeast Asian region are not. Philippines is no, Myanmar is no, Thailand is no, Indonesia is but still slow.

M Ravi: There is a lot of work. There are five deputy prosecutors, they are all at the top. Singapore finds many ways to kill people.

I think I can win. Five judges [will hear] the case. If it was a closed case and frivolous and open, they wouldn’t come either.

Secondly, psychiatric prison experts from the UK and Australia have given their expert opinion to say that the methods used by the Singapore Institute of Mental Health are backward. The tests are all wrong. Their management is very childish.
